A contributing factor to dry, flaky, skin in winter is a drop in temperature. Although winter sometimes feels damp, there is usually less water in the air than on your skin and that creates a moisture vapor loss from the skin. As skin becomes drier, its surface layer stops producing the natural lipids which prevent moisture loss, and water cannot be retained so easily.
As a result of all these factors, sometimes skin on the face and body tends to be in worse condition in the winter months than at other times of the year. In extreme cases, a constant drying effect can even lead to cracking, flaking and redness. The most common areas of your body to suffer dry skin are the arms, lower legs, thighs and flanks (sides of abdomen).
Here are 5 must-do things to do during the winter months to help fight dry skin.
1) Moisturize your body – Moisturizer is important for many reasons, the most important one is that it replaces lost water. Use a moisturizer with water-binding ingredients such as glycerin which will help seal your skin and enables the lost water to be replaced. The best moisturizers are thick and rich and should be patted on your skin, not rubbed. It is important to moisturize your skin directly after showers or baths because your skin loses moisture through evaporation. Again, pat don’t rub your skin dry. Moisturizers with chamomile or aloe vera are great natural skin creams.
2) Moisturize your living areas – Use a humidifier in your home or office to put some moisture back in the air. It will counteract the drying effects of indoor heat dry skin is often caused by the sudden switch from cold to warm air, and in particular the warm dry air of forced-air furnaces.
3) Drink lots of liquids – This will help replace the increased moisture loss. It doesn’t have to be just water, almost any liquid (not alcohol) will help hydrate your body.
4) Stay covered – Wear gloves, scarves and hats to limit the exposure of your skin to the harsh temperatures and damaging winds.
5) Eat properly – It’s important to choose healthy foods, because the healthier your body, the healthier your skin will be. Depending on the types of food you already eat, you might need to consider taking a supplement, such as Vitamin E, Omega-3 oils and B-Complex vitamins.
By nourishing your skin in all these ways, you should soon see a marked reduction in the level of dryness. Helping your skin to be more supple and moist also helps to slow down the process of aging.
