While we’re accustomed to many types of energy and technology, the only power source we couldn’t live without is the sun. Today, we’re learning more sophisticated ways to benefit from the sun; solar energy is often the cheapest way to provide energy for our homes. By installing solar panels in your home, you can have a very practical and inexpensive form of energy that has many uses.
Solar cells are contained within boxes called solar panels. In some scientific way, electricity is created by the solar cells from sunlight. The creation of electricity using sunlight happens when the rays of the sun hit the silicone solar cells making electricity manifest. One solar cell can generate about 0.5 volts of power, which is why a solar panel is made up of numerous solar cells. Solar panels can actually be made at home; many people make them in an attempt to reduce or eliminate their electrical bill. If you are good at do-it-yourself projects, more than likely you will be able to create and soldered together your very own solar panels.
All you need to do this really is a 12 V battery for storage and a solar panel to create electricity. A plain old lead acid battery, which is very affordable, is what you’ll need. Some institutions provide these batteries for free which is something you should look into if you are going to need a lot of them. Storing electricity is only part of the process; you must convert this electricity into AC to be used at home or in your garage. This means you should get a true sine wave or modified energy converter. A true sine wave inverter is the only device that will give you the same AC electricity that comes out of your sockets. Of course, these models are more expensive than their modified counterparts, are well worth the cost.
You may want to consider building and installing solar panels yourself; this is a fairly simple project, and the materials you’d need are quite easy to find. The most important component of your solar panel will be the solar cell, so you need to make sure you are buying good quality units. The more powerful they are, the more energy you’ll get out of them. On average, 80 solar cells will produce about 100 watts of electricity. Based on how much energy you need, you can use this figure to estimate how many solar panels to build and how large they’ll have to be.
The tools will require some skill, but it is something that anyone can do. So, you can soon have your own solar panel up and running and you might even end up powering your entire home with sunlight.
